I spent last week on MIDEM in Cannes, famous musical market, where about 500 journalists from all over the world are accredited and all the "big daddies" of the music come to make business: label companies, agents, owners, money people ... It was important for Slovenia as the presiding country of EU because on 29. there was so called "Slovenian day", where we were presented by some of our great musicians ...
... great job was made by the world known Slovene pianist Bojan Goriek, who is widely known for the interpretations of Erik Satie, he recorded his complete opus on 10 cds which is more than 11 hours of music. He did this already in the nineties. He announced that he would play him completely differently if he was recording Satie today. I had a wonderful talk to him at the terrace of the Hotel Martinez and later we walked on the Boulevard de la Croisette in the sunny weather, smell of the sea and fresh wind coming from the hills of Provence ...
Goriek got really long ovation of the public on his recital in Palais des Festivals. Erik Satie is really appreciated in France, bit surprisingly specially by elderly ...
I am very interested in Goriek`s words about playing Satie differently today. Still, I think his interpretation as it is, is one of the best ones ever.
Cannes was really all abut Erik Satie, I was hearing his music on every step. It fits well to the melancholic winter silhouette of the chick historic hotels Carlton, Martinez, Miramar, it suits the sound of breaking waves ... it suits the feeling of stepping into the cold white beachy sand.
